Chime upgraded to video doorbell transformer for clients doorbell which was compatible with their apple homekit

This was a great project to showcase our skills for when it comes to making electrical installations look good.

This client came to us with a standard new build standard doorbell set up, and they happened to have an Apple homekit eco system - they had Apple TV, Apple this, Apple that, and although a normal Ring Doorbell would have sufficed, the particular video doorbell they picked was directly compatible with their Apple homekit.

This particular doorbell required a slightly higher position on the wall however, and being hardwired, this did pose a challenge for us to be able to relocate the wiring from where the doorbell was, to where their new Apple-friendly video doorbell now sits. Roughly a foot higher.

We spoke to the client and being that it's a new build and everything looked nigh-on pristine, we recommended that a good way of installing this video doorbell and alter the wiring was to make an access hatch from the inside, and perform keyhole surgery inside the wall. After all - a plasterboard wall can quite easily be reinstated, fillered, sanded and painted, and made to look almost as if nothing had ever gone on there.

To do that on a brick wall, however, that's a very advanced a probably quite uneconomical way of doing the same. I'd imagine you'd have to remove a single brick from the face of the wall, then reinstall in and repoint the mortar, making sure you match the colours. Seems quite intense and convoluted!

So there we have it, An apple-friendly video doorbell we were able to relocate with nearly no mess or obvious signs of relocating, down at a lovely customers house in Cliffe Woods, kent!

Apple Doorbell Vs Ring Doorbell

A curious question I posed to this client when I asked why go through all the effort of relocating this doorbell when the Ring could have likely gone in the original position. Their answer was very clear and understandable the moment they said it - They chose this particular model, a Aqara video doorbell G4 to be precise, because it was a video doorbell which was directly compatible with their Apple home kit, and the rest of their Apple ecosystem.

Ring does a very good job, and integrated with its ecosystem probably just as well - with their particular ecosystem being more driven by Alexa-powered devices and other Amazon products, but in the clients eyes, they wanted a smooth integration with what they already had, and what they already had was an Apple home

Features of the Apple homekit friendly doorbell:

  • Live footage through your phone, with 2-way talking
  • cloud storage backup options
  • face recognition technology
  • Night time infrared night vision
  • Aqara app available from Apple's App store
