Over time, working mechanical parts, especially those involved in ventilation, are subject to wear and tear, and the build up of dust.

As that motor gets older and older, it is also having to work harder to fight through the resistance created by all this dust!

A ventilation maintenance programme would have increased its longevity for quite some time. In this case, we got there too late, and the PCB had well and truly burnt up and exhibiting quite terrible signs of thermal damage (overheating and burning).
