The original enquiry was from a customer in Tonbridge who was experiencing very odd stop-start noises from their bathroom extractor fan up in the loft. The fan itself was a fairly good model. The ducting, however, was a very different story. This bathroom extractor fan, as we subsequently came to realise, was simply moving the moisture laden air in the bathroom up into the loft space where it can't be seen - the moisture wasn't even leaving the property!
We offered the customer the proposition that there isn't much there currently that is worth keeping. None of it really tee'd us up for a text-book style, ideal world, installation. The only place we could vent out is through the brickwork, and the current vent on the bathroom ceiling was too close for us to carry out the perfect vent - bend - fan - fall - vent installation that gets you the best performance possible.
The customer accepted the proposal. We redesignated the bathroom ceiling vent and made good the old hole. We cored the brickwork and fitted a new external gravity vent on the outside, and went on to install the textbook-style bathroom extractor fan installation that we have grown to know and love.
